(mis)adventures in chocolate sauce

To be honest, I forgot when we did this. But for some reason Ladan wanted to make cupcakes but didn't know what to do with the frosting. I suggested that we make some sort of chocolate ganache that we could dip the cupcakes in...unfortunately, epic fail. We did make a ridiculously cute Cupcake Man who had a Turkey Sidekick.....Yeah I heard it.

the promised chili sauce

Here's that picture of the Thai chili sauce I used. It's made by Mae Ploy - Thai Sweet Chili Sauce. You can find it at Asian grocery stores. I don't know if Central Market has it - in fact I doubt they have it. Anyway, it's not really used as a marinade. I think you just put it on rotisserie chicken and eat it, but I put it on everything. Watch out though, it has a lot of sugar in it.

keepin it simple.

Jason rejected my invite for salmon - jokes on you sucker! I went healthy tonight - the white stuff is yogurt with cucumbers, dried mint, and garlic powder. Classic "mast e kheeyar." Reminds me of my Daddy - he loves making this stuff. The dried mint is courtesy of my parents' backyard - freshly dried and crushed by my Mummy!! Also, I ate half the salmon before I took this picture. When I cook I usually eat half my dinner standing up because I can't wait to sit down.

Special thanks to my shisterrrrr for buying me these groceries! Until next time...

Welcome to our world. The world of delicious food.

I have always loved food. Ever since I was little and I was "just right" as my mother called me. I've continued my love affair with food through college into medical school - and I found a group of friends who love food just as much as I do. We dubbed ourselves the "Foodies."

Jason and I decided it was time we chronicled our journey through the difficult years of medical school with a food timeline. Since we've just started our second year, we're a year behind. Better catch up ASAP.

Here we will post food we cook ourselves, or food we eat out that we think is particularly notable. I'm a big baker, so I'll be posting my delectable baked goods as well. As always, we will take requests and suggestions for things to make OR places to eat.

Onward, to fill our bellies with happiness....

Splendid Chicken Skewers

Woo! First post! An epic adventure has begun. Who knew med students had time to cook? If you knew me last year or any time before that you would've thought that I was crazy to spend time cooking instead of studying. For instance, I should be reading right now...Let's say I've changed for the better. But really, I have no idea what to write as an introduction. I think Ladan is taking care of that.

Anyway, tonight I made chicken skewers using the grill that I am obsessed with. My awesome roommate, Quy, and I bought a grill at the beginning of the school year, and it was probably one of the best purchases I have made food-wise. Since my philosophy of cooking is to never measure (hence I don't bake), I'll just describe how I made it.

I made a marinade out of Thai sweet chili sauce (I'll update a picture later), soy sauce, olive oil, cayenne pepper, and about 5 cloves of garlic. I cut the chicken into cubes and marinated them overnight, covered in the fridge. This afternoon I soaked bamboo skewers in water for about 30 minutes before skewering the marinated chicken cubes and pieces of yellow onion, alternating them on the skewers. I grilled the skewers (I got 6 skewers out of 3 chicken breasts) for about 4 minutes on each side, turning once (2 sides total - I was too lazy to turn more and it was really unnecessary). I served the skewers with brown rice and steamed broccoli.

3 cheers for the grill. Many more grilling adventures to come. Ladan has tried rib-eye steak and salmon that I made on the grill last week. Too bad I don't have any pictures :(

Ok my Safari just froze. I just want to say that after updating to Snow Leopard, everything has been working slower. WTF, Apple? Don't make me hate you....because you will get fat.
